Peter Mooney Talks ‘Burden Of Truth’ Season 1, Working With Kristin Kreuk
“Burden of Truth,” The CW’s new summer show premiering tonight (July 25), is unlike anything else on the network.
Take an hour breather each week from the sci-fi and the fantasy and dive deep into an interesting season-long legal case. CW fans fell in love with one of the leads, Kristin Kreuk (Joanna), from her time on “Smallville” and “Beauty and the Beast,” and now they’ll fall for her co-star, Peter Mooney (Billy), as well.
The summer series, which already aired all of Season 1 on CBC in Canada, follows lawyers Joanna and Billy as they work to uncover why a group of girls are suffering from a strange illness in a small town called Millwood. The two start off on opposing sides of the case in episode 1, but then join together to fight for the girls.
Mooney spoke with International Business Times to give U.S. fans the scoop on Season 1 of “Burden of Truth” before it debuts on The CW on Wednesday:
International Business Times: What can fans expect from Billy and Joanna’s partnership?
Peter Mooney: They can expect a partnership that’s not easy. Billy and Joanna come out the gates…they’re on opposing sides and for a lot of the series, they really have different methods, different ways of dealing with people. A really different worldview. But fans can expect them to come closer and closer together as they move on and become more of a partnership throughout the season.
IBT: They both grew up in Millwood, but Joanna had moved away for a while. Will we learn about their childhoods in the town?
Mooney: We do, we do. We learn, in the first season, in particular, we learn a lot about Joanna’s childhood and what that looked like in Millwood. We’re in the middle of filming the second season right now, and we start to get a bit more into Billy’s childhood then, but that’s a ways down the line. But we get a sense of what it was like for both of them growing up and how far they’ve come and how different it is for them coming back together.
IBT: Since Millwood is a small town, can we assume there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to what’s going on there?
Mooney: I can say, having shot it, and now having watched the first season, there is a lot more than it seems initially. It’s got some great twists and turns. And some really unexpected things.
IBT: How has it been working with Kreuk?
Mooney: She’s fantastic to work with. We have a lot of fun on set and I think, even though the show deals with some pretty heavy subject matter, a lot of that fun comes through.
IBT: You work mainly with Kreuk, but which of the other cast members have you been enjoying working with?
Mooney: There are — some of the younger actors on the show, Star Slade, is just like amazing. Sara Thompson, who plays my niece on the show, is fantastic. Getting to work with them is so great because they bring a whole new energy to the set. That’s really fun.
IBT: Which aspect of filming the show do you enjoy most?
Mooney: When we shoot the court scenes, we shoot them at the courts here in Winnipeg...and we go in after the court has been in session all day. So we start at about 5 o’clock in the evening and go until sometime early the next morning. So, it’s so great being in an actual courtroom that there were trials going on earlier that day. It just makes it feel — you can feel the weight of it. It makes it feel really real. So, I think those end up being my favorites. Also, just at night. At two in the morning, everyone starts to get a little loopy, which makes for some good outtakes.
IBT: Is there a certain episode in Season 1 that you’re really looking forward to fans seeing?
Mooney: I’m particularly excited for episode 5, for The CW fans, because it’s the midpoint in our season, and it’s where we reach a real person point with everyone. There’s just a little bit of a breather from the case, and we sort of get to spend some time with each of the characters. And, for me, it’s one of my favorite episodes for the whole season.
IBT: If you had to give a quick elevator pitch about why fans should tune in to “Burden of Truth,” what would you say?
Mooney: I think the reason you should watch “Burden of Truth” is it takes one case over a whole season, and we get to spend so much time with it and sort of a lot of the things we get used to in TV where we have a resolution every hour, we’re able to just have so many more twists and turns and sort of unexpected places we go. So, I think, for the fans that come out for the show, there’s going to be a lot of really satisfying surprises for them.
“Burden of Truth” premieres on The CW on Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT.
