Phil Mickelson Falls Down Recovering Shot During Pebble Beach Pro-Am; Watch Video Of Former Champ Slip

It was a flub that wouldn’t have looked out of place in “Happy Gilmore.” Already losing at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, golfer Phil Mickelson fell while trying to recover two errant balls he shot into Carmel Bay, landing right on his butt.

Now, thanks to the rolling cameras and world of social media, nearly every corner of the Internet is pointing and laughing. The four-time champion stood up right away with a bit of a smile and wave, but the damage had been done, the GIFs uploaded.

“I got lucky,” Mickelson said. “I didn’t get hurt.”

Mickelson was probably more concerned about the rest of his day on the course. He made the cut but admitted being disappointed in a performance of 1-over 73, which left him at 1 under for the tournament.

“I was just a little bit off on the greens, just a little bit off on the driving, just a little bit off on the irons," he said. "I just couldn't get going, and then to finish with a triple, it doesn't feel great. I just wish I had played a lot better.”

Mickelson’s fall put him in high company, though, at the end of an odd week in golf. He joined Condoleezza Rice on the blooper reel after the former secretary of state, also playing at Pebble Beach, hit a fan on the head with an errant shot. Unlike Mickelson, the spectator had a cut on her head and required medical attention.

"Somebody asked me, 'How did it compare to diplomacy?'" Rice said. "And I said, 'Well, I know how to do diplomacy, I'm not so sure about the golf course.'"
