Update at 1:57 a.m. ET: The gunman involved in the standoff is in police custody, PPD Seragent Eric Gripp tweeted.

A lone gunman holed-up in a house in North Philadelphia shot and wounded six officers of the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) Wednesday afternoon.

PPD said the wounded officers, who were shot while serving a warrant, had non-life threatening injuries. A number of other officers are also receiving treatment for non-gunshot injuries, said PPD.

PPD Sgt. Eric Gripp confirmed in a tweet Wednesday afternoon six officers were at area hospitals being treated for non-life threatening injuries. He also said the gunman is still active and urged people to avoid the area.

He revealed the shooting occurred near 3700 N 15th Street when the suspect fired on police. He said a large police presence was mobilized to respond. The location is in the Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood in North Philadelphia, near Temple University’s Health and Sciences Center Campus.

The shooting incident began at about 4:30 p.m. local time in a residential area of the Nicetown section. Police said they are confronting a lone male shooter in what they say is an active situation.

PPD said the gunbattle began when an officer attempted to serve a warrant at the address.

A witness living near the shooting scene told NBC Philadelphia she heard a series of about 100 gunshots. She said she could smell what seemed to be gunpowder during the gunbattle.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are now at the scene to assist, said a PPD spokesperson.

Temple University's Health Sciences Center Campus was put on lockdown during the shootout.

"Seek shelter. Secure doors. Be silent. Be still. Police are responding," tweeted the university.

"Praying for the recovery of the police officers who were injured in the line of duty and the safety of others responding to this incident," tweeted Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.

Wolf also said he was aware of the situation and offered support to the PPD.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on situation.
