[PHOTOS] Amanda Knox's Four Years in Court
With a verdict due on Monday, Amanda Knox is hoping to be acquitted and freed from her life in the Italian prison where she spent nearly four years of her life.
Knox, the 24-year-old American exchange student convicted of her British roommate Meredith Kercher's murder in 2007 and sentenced to 26 years in prison, has appealed her conviction along with her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Prosecutors have demanded that Knox's sentence be increased from 26 years to life, calling the murder of Kercher a senseless crime and Knox a she-devil as they portrayed her as a double-sided, sex-crazed party girl. Kercher's body was wounded over 40 times with her throat slit.
Kercher, 21, was stabbed to death in the apartment she shared with Knox. Prosecutors alleged the killing began like a sexual assault, while Knox and Sollecito said they spent the night at his house that night, watching a movie, smoking marijuana and having sex.
They were young but they killed for no reason, prosecutor Manuela Comodi said. They killed for no reason and for this they should be given the maximum sentence, which luckily in Italy is not the death sentence.
In the event Knox's guilty verdict is overturned, prosecutors vow to appeal. However, she will be free to depart Italy toward the United States, in which cause subsequent appeal by prosecutors would take place in her absence.
An acquittal would mean an escape abroad and no justice in this case. It's up to you to bring justice, prosecutor Giuliano Mignini told the court in rebuttals after closing arguments.
In case Knox is again convicted, she will have one more chance to appeal.
Knox has visibly lost weight and looks exhausted from four years behind bars.
The murder case has garnered a huge media attention, particularly on Knox, who has maintained her innocence throughout the trials.
In a final plea, Knox herself is expected to address the court.
Knox has gathered international attentions as a normal college student's life was completely overturned in one night and her image was publicly crucified and impaled, as her lawyer described it on Thursday.
