Pit Bull Attack Leaves 5-Year-Old Boy With Severe Facial Injuries, Broken Bones
A 5-year-old boy in Michigan had to undergo facial reconstructive surgery after he was viciously mauled by two dogs. The child was reportedly left in a critical condition following the attack.
The boy, identified as Hunter Callender, was playing with his younger sister outside his grandmother's house in Grand Rapids on May 12 when two pit bulls attacked him. The canines came out of a neighbor's car and lunged at him, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.
Callender suffered several broken bones and gashes on his face, neck and head, the New York Post reported. Ashley White, the boy's mother, said her son has been struggling since the attack.
"He's been pretty down. He's pretty traumatized by the whole event," White told WZZM-TV. "He doesn't know what to think. I mean, he's only five and that's quite an event to go through."
Callender's jawbone, cheekbone and eye socket were broken and his right eye had a double vision due to the damage. The damage in the jawbone is so bad that some of his adult teeth will fail to properly develop, the GoFundMe page said, citing a doctor.
The child has already undergone multiple operations, including a five-hour reconstructive surgery, following the attack. Doctors said his jaw was wired shut and a feeding tube will be inserted to allow the bones to heal.
"His surgery went good. They got the eye socket bone put back together along with his jaw," White said. "After that surgery, they actually had to wire his jaw shut. So, he's supposed to have a feeding tube in and he actually ripped it out. So, now we're trying to figure out how we can get him food because he hasn't ate since we've been here."
The pit bulls were reportedly euthanized and their owner was charged. However, the exact charges remain unknown.
It is not clear how long it will take for the child to completely recover, but his father said he has a long road to recovery.
