Pizza May Be Healthier Breakfast Than Cereal: Here's Why
Going for that bowl of cereal first thing in the morning? You may want to reconsider and opt for your leftover pizza instead.
Breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day. What you have for breakfast could predict how you feel for the rest of the day.
Nowadays, one of the most common breakfast choices is a good ole bowl of cereal. A bowl of cereal has long been advertised as being part of a complete and balanced breakfast, but that might not be as true as you think.
According to The Daily Meal, most of America’s cereal options contain about as much sugar as candy with favorites such as Kellog’s Fruit Loops containing nearly 41.4 percent sugar in a single serving. These cereal options are not only high in sugar, but they’re also nutritionally lacking as most of them contain nothing but spoonfuls of sugar these days and absolutely no protein, fats or any of the nutrition your body needs first thing in the morning.
As such, it’s no wonder pizza beats cereal as being the healthier breakfast option.
According to nutritionist Chelsey Amer, a slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with milk contain almost the same amount of calories. And while pizza has more fat, the sugar levels in pizza are lower compared to most cereal options. This reassures you that you will experience a “sugar crash” as with most cereals.
Additionally, pizza provides more protein which satiates your appetite longer and keeps you full, thus making you most likely to avoid snacking throughout the day. Pizza also contains cheese, which has been recently named a superfood. The bacteria in cheese is said to boost your immune system and can reduce intestinal inflammation. Cheese is also nutrient-dense and compared to eating a bowl of glorified sugar and milk, you should opt for the more nutritious option. And that option is pizza.
While pizza isn’t considered a health food and is definitely not the most nutritious option for breakfast, when compared to a bowl of cereal, it’s definitely the more balanced and nutritious meal of the two.
