  • Sales gap for November was over 100,000 units in favor of the PlayStation 4
  • November sales adds to a 2019 gap of more than 700,000 more PS4s sold than Xbox Ones
  • Report only accounts for U.S. sales and doesn't account for the Nintendo Switch

Sales figures released Thursday confirm PlayStation 4 maintained its dominance over Xbox One for both the holiday season and 2019 in the United States.

English business intelligence and research company VGChartz reported Sony sold 154,522 more PlayStation 4 consoles than Microsoft sold of Xbox Ones in November. The difference adds to a sales gap now topping 700,000 units.

The VGChartz report is the latest to reinforce the PS4’s standing as the most popular system of its console generation. However, it’s worth noting the report only accounts for the United States and does consider Nintendo Switch.

Since launching in 2013, Sony has sold 31,411,653 PS4s in the U.S., boasting a library of exclusive games that includes popular releases like “God of War” and “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End,” along with upcoming titles like “The Last of Us Part II.” It also positioned itself as the cheaper, more accessible console for gamers with a launch price of $399.99.

Xbox One, on the other hand, found itself trailing PS4 since launch thanks to a heavily criticized reveal event in 2013. It also lacked the library of exclusives PS4 boasted and was more expensive at launch, costing $499.99.

This difference has been reflected in lifetime global sales, with PS4 selling over 102 million consoles to Xbox One’s over 46 million consoles. Microsoft was able to make up some ground thanks to the release of the Xbox One X in 2017, which was touted as the most powerful gaming console on the market.

However, as 2019 comes to a close, Microsoft and Sony have both started looking to the future with the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 confirmed to be releasing during the 2020 holiday season.
