KEY POINTS

  • Sony recently unveiled their upcoming controller for PS5 called DualSense
  • Unlike the Xbox Series X Controller, DualSense takes a massive departure from its predecessor
  • DualSense and Xbox Series X Controller pose different approach in gaming

There won’t be a DualShock 5 for the upcoming PlayStation 5. Instead, Sony is bringing in a new controller that is just perfect for the leap that PS5 is taking.

In an announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management Hideaki Nishino unveiled the DualSense -- a redesigned wireless controller that brings in new features that are aimed to improve the gaming experience of players.

While the full details and features of the new and much-improved controller are yet to be revealed, there are already some major differences that can be seen as compared to its predecessor, the DualShock 4.

We also take a look at the key difference DualSense has against the reported features of the Xbox Series X Controller.

Haptic Feedback For The Win

The Xbox Series X controller will be making use of haptic feedback, so PS5 wouldn’t let their rival get ahead of them when it comes to this feature.

Adopting haptic feedback gives way for better immersion for players, and according to the PlayStation update, DualSense will bring a “variety of powerful sensations” while playing using this feature.

“We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow,” Nishino furthered in the announcement.

From Share To Create Button

The DualSense won’t be removing the share button. However, it looks like it is getting a major upgrade.

While the Xbox Series X will just be adding the share button to their controller, Sony seems to be taking another step with DualSense.

The share button has been a defining feature of DualShock 4. In a big step though, DualSense will be having a “create” button in its place. While information about the function of the button is scarce as of the moment, Nishino highlighted that it will be “pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content.”

Built-In Mic For Chatting

The Xbox Series X controller doesn’t have this function, which certainly gives the DualSense an edge when it comes to player experience.

With the new built-in microphone array, players will be able to chat with friends without a headset – perfect for trash talking and, well, just having fun. Nonetheless, it appears the feature is not advisable for long use.

Other changes in DualSense include a new form – which is slightly thicker from DualShock 4 – and USB-C Port. More details are expected to come as Sony enters its final design stage for the new PS5 Controller.

Meanwhile, in comparison, the Xbox Series X controller doesn’t really depart that much from its predecessor. Aside from the addition of the share button cited above, the controller will also have a hybrid d-pad and undergo a slight redesign.

Moreover, it is worth noting that Microsoft’s iteration will be introducing Bluetooth Low Energy support.

It is clear that DualSense and the Xbox Series X controller show a clash in focus and concept. While Sony’s target is for improved player immersion by taking a massive change, Microsoft is aiming for connectivity, efficiency and comfort – as proven by their decision not to change their core design too much.
