  • PS5 DualShock 5 controller could change the way we play video games
  • New patent reveals new technology called Share Play feature
  • The new feature could allow a single-player game be played by multiple players

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced earlier this year that the official name of its next-generation gaming console is PlayStation 5. It also shared details about the new features of its next-generation controller, which the gaming community calls DualShock 5. A new patent filed by the Japanese console maker reveals that the new features of the DualShock 5 controller will change the way we play video games.

Sony already revealed that the DualShock 5 controller would feature adaptive triggers and improved haptic feedback. But, what we did not see coming is the possible feature that it might introduce, as seen on a recent patent filing. Earlier, we say a PlayStation virtual assistant patent that shows a Siri-like AI that could tell what the user is playing.

It could also offer live help whenever the player needs one. The patent was seen a few months ago, but Sony did not unveil a product with such a feature. Even during an interview about the PlayStation 5 controller, the Japanese console maker declined to explain the microphone opening on the controller, which could provide any voice-based interactions with the gaming console. But, the second PlayStation 5 controller patent recently discovered is equally exciting.

LetsGoDigital recently spotted the patent titled “Bifurcation of Shared Controls and Passing Controls In A Video Game.” It was filed in the USPTO in mid-2018 and approved later this month. The patent describes PlayStation 5 and DualShock 5 controller technology that would allow Sony to transform any single player game into a multiplayer gaming experience.

Based on the illustration made by LetsGoDigital, the patent seems straightforward. Several PlayStation 5 players would be able to control a single character in the game, with each one engaging in a certain type of action. Interestingly, the patent suggests that each player could rock his own DualShock 5 controller, but the next generation controller would only register specific gestures because only some of the buttons on every controller would be active at that time.

The idea is genius and could definitely help introduce a new way of gaming. It is worth noting, however, that not all patents end up as a product available for commercial use. Tech giants like Sony have a habit of filing these patents, with most of them left as a concept. Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 is scheduled to be released sometime in the holiday of 2020, hopefully alongside the DualShock 5 controller.
