'Pokemon Omega Ruby' And 'Alpha Sapphire' Ships 7.7 Million Copies Since Nov. 21

Game Freak’s “Pokemon Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire” launched on Nov. 21 in North America, Japan and Australia, and on Nov. 28 in Europe. The popular Nintendo 3DS games have managed to ship 7.7 million copies and are already outselling 2013’s “Pokemon X” and “Pokemon Y,” The Pokemon Co. announced.

The two games also sold more than three million copies between Japan, the US and other territories within three days. 1.5 million copies were sold in Japan, and the rest were sold in America and Australia.

“Pokemon Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire” are enhanced remakes of the 2002 Game Boy Advance titles “Pokemon Ruby” and “Sapphire.” The games were announced in May 2014 and were released exactly 12 years after the original titles – on the same day.

“Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire” are similar to other “Pokemon” games – players take on the role of a young trainer who must catch and train Pokemon to win battles against other trainers. By defeating other Pokemon, players level up and increase their battle stats.

The original “Pokemon Ruby” and “Pokemon Sapphire” games sold 16.22 million copies worldwide. Nintendo announced the remakes would reach the 3DS portable console in May of 2014.
