Police to Resume Search Operation of Utah Missing Mom
Authorities are planning to restart the searching work of Utah mother who went missing two-years ago in the Utah desert.
Authorities by Saturday afternoon had dug about 3 feet down into what they've described as a shallow grave in the rugged Utah desert as part of the investigation, but they found no clue.
Authorities are searching the Utah desert since Monday. While searching the Utah mother, Susan Powell, authorities found unidentified human remains on Wednesday. There were speculations that remains found in the desert some 50 miles southwest of Salt Lake City might have belonged to Susan Powell. However, authorities have said it was a young adult male.
Cadaver dogs led police to the site Wednesday just off a dirt road near the base of Topaz Mountain, a popular rock-hounding spot in remote central Utah, Associated Press reported.
We hoped we would find the hard evidence that everybody wanted, West Valley City Lt. Bill Merritt told Associated Press on Saturday.
But instead of finding any clue authorities have found small burnt chips of wood in the hole.
They obviously have some type of human decomposition on them because that's what the dogs are hitting on, Merritt said. It's a game of patience at this point, West Valley City Sgt. Mike Powell said. We need to slow down a little bit and identify what it is we found.
Powell, then 28, was reported missing on Dec. 7, 2009. She was last seen at a church by her friends. She also failed to show up for her stockbroker job.
Powell's husband is still the only person of interest in the case but has never been arrested or charged.
Her husband, Josh Powell, told police that he left his wife at home around 12:30 a.m. that day to go winter camping with their young sons -- then 4 and 2 -- on the Pony Express Trail, which is about 80 miles west of Salt Lake City, AP reported.
Though her husband is the only person of interest in the case, Susan’s family believed that she ran off with another man. Authorities have been combing the area near Topaz Mountain in Juab County since Monday. The site is about 135 miles southwest of the location where Powell was last seen in West Valley City, according to The AP.
It added that Susan's father, Chuck Cox, and his family remain hopeful, but were preparing for the worst.
Josh Powell’s family claims that Susan was sexually immoral and emotionally unbalanced.
