Potential Mass Shooting Targeting Fans Leaving Rapper Yo Gotti’s Concert Thwarted

Memphis, TN -- A Tennessee man was arrested and booked for "commission of an act of terrorism" after reportedly threatening a mass shooting at Rapper Yo Gotti’s Concert.

According to a Memphis police report, rapper Yo Gotti was having his eighth annual Birthday Bash on Saturday morning at the same venue as that of the FedExForum event.

Officers responded to an armed mental consumer complaint in the 200 block of South Main Street at 2:50 a.m. Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers were confronted by the suspect, Elijah Hyman, 28, and his girlfriend when they arrived at the scene, NY Daily News reported.

According to police, the suspect was upset over a breakup with his girlfriend, WSOC-TV reported. The MPD wrote in their Facebook post that Hyman wanted to "kill himself and everyone he saw coming from an event being held at the FedEx Forum" because his relationship was ending.

The police noticed that Hyman's hand was bleeding from an injury from a glass window in his apartment. He was then taken into custody and sent to a medical facility for treatment and evaluation.

A search warrant was later issued to check his apartment where several weapons were found. Following that the ATF was contacted, according to police.

Yo Gotti said in a series of tweets that he was informed of a potential threat, “regarding an individual seeking to harm the attendees leaving the Birthday Bash that occurred three hours after our show ended.”

"I would also like to thank the Memphis Police Department for their swift and proactive action in ensuring that all attendees returned home safely," he added.

Yo Gotti's annual birthday event was resuming for the first time after being canceled in 2020 and 2021 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, per Memphis-based newspaper The Commercial Appeal.

In May, authorities detained a fifth-grade student after he allegedly threatened to conduct a mass shooting, in writing, at his elementary school in Cape Coral. The case was turned over to the Youth Services Criminal Investigations Division for further probe.
