Powerball Jackpot Climbs To Estimated $300 Million: When And Where To Watch Powerball Drawing Saturday
Poor folks dreaming of becoming rich folks -- and rich folks dreaming of becoming richer folks -- will be glued to the tube as the Multi-State Lottery Association in the U.S. conducts its semiweekly Powerball drawing Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EDT. This drawing could produce the third-biggest Powerball winner of 2013, with the current estimated jackpot to have an annuity value of $300.0 million and a cash value of $172.7 million.
The biggest Powerball winners so far this year are Florida’s Gloria C. MacKenzie, who on May 18 won a jackpot with an annuity value of $590.5 million and a cash value of $370.9 million, and New Jersey’s Pedro Quezada, who on March 23 won a jackpot with an annuity value of $338.3 million and a cash value of $221.0 million. Both MacKenzie and Quezada chose to collect their winnings not on an annuity basis but on a cash basis, which historically has been the most popular option among big Powerball winners.
Meanwhile, MacKenzie is commonly considered the winner of the largest prize ever on one ticket. Powerball players this weekend probably should not get too pumped about possibly following in her footsteps just yet, though: The lottery sponsor has calculated the odds of hitting the jackpot as 1 in 175,223,510.
To anyone without either experience or knowledge of its flagship product, the Multi-State Lottery Association offers this capsule description: “Powerball is a combined large jackpot game and a cash game. Every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 p.m. Eastern time, we draw five white balls out of a drum with 59 balls and one red ball out of a drum with 35 red balls. … Players win by matching one of the ‘9 Ways to Win.’ The jackpot (won by matching all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball) is either an annuitized prize paid out over 29 years (30 payments) or a lump-sum payment. Each ticket costs $2.” Powerball is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
