United States Steel Corp. (X) stock surged 2.64 percent to $24.48 in pre-market trading. Global markets rallied Wednesday as sentiment was buoyed after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a deal to avert the fiscal cliff. The Republican-dominated House late Tuesday approved the tax bill that will see a hike in income tax rates on only the wealthiest adults and stop the world’s largest economy from falling back into a recession.

The company said that it was evaluating the disposition of businesses that had not met goals more than a year after Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman said she didn’t plan to spin off the personal-computer division, Bloomberg has reported.

The company announced Wednesday that it had entered into an agreement pursuant to which its wholly owned subsidiary ArcelorMittal Mines Canada and a consortium led by POSCO and China Steel Corporation would enter into a joint venture partnership that would own ArcelorMittal`s Labrador Trough iron ore mining and infrastructure assets.
