A 32-year-old pregnant woman in India allegedly smothered her 2-year-old son to death before jumping off a building to kill herself.
The incident took place Wednesday morning in the western state of Gujarat. According to local media, the woman jumped to her death from the terrace on the sixth floor of her apartment in the city of Surat. When the police arrived at the scene, they found the woman's son dead inside the house. The woman was six months pregnant.
The police said the woman, identified as Binita Pande, lived with her two sons and her husband in the rented house. The couple's 4-year-old was found safe and unharmed inside the house, News 18 reported [Google Translate showed].
An autopsy of the 2-year-old revealed the child died of suffocation. The police believe the woman killed her child before ending her own life.
Investigators said Pande called her relatives in the city before taking the extreme step of killing herself.
“She informed them over phone that she had killed her son and is going to end her life too. She then jumped from the terrace, K L Dhaduk, a senior police officer, told The Times of India.
The police said the woman’s husband, identified as Mahesh, was not at home when the incident took place. Pande’s parents, who live in Mumbai, have been informed and will be questioned after they arrive in Surat.
The motive behind the killing and the suicide remains unknown. The police said they were investigating the incident and have questioned the victim's family and neighbors.
Earlier this week, a man in the southern state of Karnataka took his own life after being allegedly blackmailed by four minor boys. The police said the boys had recorded the man in a compromising situation with his girlfriend and threatened him to leak the sex videos. The victim – identified as Supreeth K – was found dead inside the washroom of a hotel. Supreeth consumed poison to kill himself and left a suicide note in which he named the boys.
