Pregnant Woman Dies After Husband Allegedly Forces Her To Drink Toilet Cleaner, Accused Flees
A pregnant woman in India died Wednesday after her husband allegedly forced her to drink toilet cleaner.
The incident took place in the southern state of Telangana. According to local media reports, the accused married the victim four years ago, and started harassing her after she became pregnant. It is believed the husband, identified only as Tarun, was unhappy as he thought his wife was "not good looking."
An argument reportedly broke out between the married couple Tuesday, the police said. During this time, the husband forced her to drink toilet cleaning liquid.
After consuming the chemical, the woman – identified by her first name Kalyani – fell extremely ill and was taken to a government hospital in Nizamabad for treatment by her family members. She was under treatment, but died later, She the People reported.
When doctors announced the woman's death, her family filed a police complaint against Tarun. They alleged the man had been harrassing the deceased over additional dowry. He then allegedly decided to kill her by forcing her to drink the toilet cleaner.
On the basis of the complaint, the police launched an investigation. But, when they went to question Tarun, he had fled. Authorities have launched a manhunt for Tarun.
The police have also charged the husband under sections 302 (for murder), 304B (the death of a woman due to burns or bodily injuries) and 498A (cruelty against a woman met by her husband or husband’s relatives) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), The Times of India reported.
Last year, in October, a 32-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his wife because he was annoyed with their arguments. He then shot his mother-in-law for taking his wife's side. The incident took place in the Indian state of Gujarat. The police arrived at the scene and found the bodies of two women -- Nidhi, 21 and her mother Beero, 55. The police also found the suspect, Mahesh, standing at the scene of the crime. The officers asked the accused to identify himself. "In reply, he told us that he had done his work by killing his wife and mother-in-law," an officer told The Times of India at the time.
