An eight-week pregnant woman in India died Wednesday of massive bleeding after a quack performed abortion on her.

The incident took place in the southern state of Karnataka. The police launched an investigation to locate the quack, who was on the run after he learned about the 27-year-old woman's death. Health officials sealed an acupuncture center in Hosur, which was run by the quack named Murugesan.

Earlier this week, R Gorima of the village sought abortion at a local clinic. After consultation, the "doctor" at the clinic agreed to perform the abortion. On Wednesday, she was administered a drug, following which the woman had excessive bleeding and lost consciousness, The New Indian Express reported.

“Murugesan prescribed some medicines for Korima at the acupuncture center,” a police officer told The Times of India, adding she died within a few minutes of taking the medicines.

The woman's family members rushed her to nearby Thorapalli Primary Health Centre. However, the doctors at the facility could not stop the bleeding and declared her dead.

Murugesan "had prescribed allopathic medicines to his patients,” chief doctor of Hosur government hospital Dr. Boopathi said, according to The Times of India.

In the early hours Thursday, a team of health officials and drug inspectors reached the acupuncture clinic, but were unable to trace the quack. After examining his documents, investigators concluded the man was not a doctor but a quack.

“We conducted a comprehensive investigation into the credentials of the doctor and found that he was a quack. He was identified as Murugesan (59), a native of Tiruppur district, who had set up the clinic here a few years ago. Also, he is an acupuncture specialist, but in the clinic, we found many allopathy medicines. We have sealed the clinic and recovered all the medicines for evidence,” drug inspector Rajiv Gandhi reported.

“The quack had no qualification. We are yet to ascertain the cause of the woman’s death. From the testimonies from the victim’s family, we have found that they had indeed sought the doctor for an abortion and we have also found a syringe used to administer an unknown drug,” Paramasivan, Joint Director of Health Services, told The New Indian Express.

Paramasivan urged people to approach government hospitals for such procedures as abortion is legal in India up to 20 weeks of conception.
