Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka's relationship with club fans stooped to a new level after he appeared to tell the supporters to "f--- off" on Sunday.

The incident occurred when Xhaka was substituted in the Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

Arsenal fans celebrated when Xhaka's number was held up to be replaced by youngster Bukayo Saka.

As he left the field, Arsenal skipper gestured to encourage the fans to get behind the team as the home players were then still looking for an equalizer. The Swiss man has not been very popular among the Gunners supporters and the fans, present at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, who made their feelings quite clear.

Ignoring Xhaka's gesture, the fans began to boo the captain when he was leaving the field in the second half and that did not go down well with Xhaka.

An evidently irritated Xhaka immediately had a change in mood as he jeered by cupping his ear to the crowd and appeared to say "f--- off" before he went down the players' tunnel. Xhaka then tore his shirt off as he refused a seat back on the bench.

"He's wrong but we are going to speak inside about that situation," Unai Emery, Arsenal boss said, reacting to Xhaka's actions. "I want to be calm but, really, he was wrong in this action."

Xhaka also received backlash from Arsenal legend Ian Wright. "They are frustrated that he hasn’t run off the pitch. I’ve seen him before bolt off when he’s substituted," he said. "He’s walked off and then he goads them. We’re talking about fans who have watched him play a handful of good games in three years. And he’s treating them like that."

"He should apologize. That’s the guy Arsenal have chosen as captain… that’s not captain behavior," Wright said. "Arsenal fans have been patient with him. He owes them a lot more than that." Xhaka was given Arsenal's armband exactly a month ago.
