A major blow awaits Manchester United, who could be without their first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea in their crucial clash against Liverpool FC on Sunday.

De Gea suffered a hamstring injury during international duty when he played in Spain's Euro 2020 qualifier in Sweden on Tuesday.

An hour into the game in Stockholm, when Spain was trailing 1-0, De Gea was replaced by Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga. Forward Rodrigo netted an equalizer in the injury time and that helped Spain draw the match 1-1 and secure a spot at the Euros.

The Spanish goalkeeper's injury has come at a very tricky time for his club, Man Utd, who are undergoing their worst start in the history of Premier League. They are placed 12th on the points table and have not won in their past three games.

On Tuesday, while clearing a pass from his own teammate, De Gea grabbed the back of his leg and immediately went flat on the ground. He was then taken off the field by the physios.

Liverpool, who are yet to lose or draw a game, are aiming for an 18th consecutive Premier League win, a total that would level them with Manchester City's current record. Table leaders, The Reds, are eight points clear of the reigning Premier League champions and if Man Utd are forced to keep their premier goalie out, the task of stopping Jurgen Klopp's side will get twice as tougher.

If De Gea is not fit to play at Old Trafford this weekend, Argentina's Sergio Romero - who has played for Man Utd in the Europa League and League Cup this season - is expected to replace him.

Earlier, De Gea was critical of his club's current performance in the league. "The whole season isn't acceptable for us. We have injuries but it's not an excuse. We are Manchester United. We need to train hard to keep fighting and to get back to winning games," he said in a recent interview after Man Utd lost their away fixture to Newcastle United 1-0.
