  • Scot McTominay underwent a surgery to rectify his groin issue
  • Man Utd are currently placed sixth in the league table
  • They were held at a 1-1 draw by Southampton last weekend

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay will miss Sunday's Premier League clash with Wolves, Manchester United confirmed Thursday.

McTominay, who was struggling with a groin issue that caused immense pain while playing, has undergone surgery and will aim to get back to action as soon as possible.

"Scott has undergone surgery for an ongoing groin injury that was causing significant pain when playing. Having tried all other treatment options in pre-season, surgery was deemed necessary to resolve the issue. We hope to have him back soon," Manchester United said in an official statement.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had heaped praise on McTominay for his performance in Manchester United's 5-1 win in their season opener game against Leeds at Old Trafford. In the Red Devils' second game of the 2021-22 Premier League, McTominay was restricted to only a cameo off the bench as the visitors were held at a 1-1 draw by Southampton at St. Mary's.

With four points from the opening two matches, Manchester United are placed sixth in the Premier League table. The upcoming Wolves fixture is their last game before the international break.

McTominay's absence in the midfield is set to be a major blow for Manchester United as Solskjaer's side has a busy September coming up with matches in the Premier League, League Cup and Champions League. While they have been drawn to face West Ham in the League Cup, the Red Devils have Villarreal, Young Boys and Atalanta in their group in the European tournament.

Manchester United are scheduled to take on Newcastle, the Hammers once again and Aston Villa in the Premier League next month.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's new signing, Raphael Varane, could make his debut during their trip to West Midlands this weekend. Varane is coming after a 10-year stint at Real Madrid and many are curious to see how will he fare for the Old Trafford side.

Ahead of the Wolves clash, Varane's France teammate, Paul Pogba, spoke highly about the center-back. Pogba believes Varane is one of the assets of Manchester United and everyone can learn from him.

"[What does he bring?] His experience, [It's] his experience, you know. For a young age, he’s seen it all. He has a lot of experience to give to the team. I think everyone can learn from him. He’s been with the best and played with the best. He saw all the top players and can give his advice, his personality and his experience to the team, like I said," Pogba said.
