KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd to take on Chelsea at Old Trafford Thursday
  • Man Utd are placed sixth in the league table
  • Harry Maguire has picked up a niggle in his knee

Manchester United have a few players out with injuries ahead of their Premier League meeting with Chelsea Thursday.

Red Devils skipper Harry Maguire, along with Fred and Jadon Sancho, won’t feature in their team’s league match against Chelsea at Old Trafford, interim boss Ralf Rangnick confirmed on the eve of the game.

While Brazilian midfielder Fred is still recovering from his flexor issue, Maguire has a niggle in his knee and Sancho is ill.

"Fred is unfortunately not yet available. He tried to train yesterday but after training, I had a long conversation with him and he just told me that he doesn't feel fully fit, he's not at 100 per cent, and with a player like Fred who's always committed to giving his very best, I don't think it makes sense, with the muscular injury that he had, to play him too early, because that would mean we take the risk of a re-injury and this is something that I don't want to do. So he won't be available unfortunately tomorrow," Rangnick was quoted by Man Utd’s media, as saying in the pre-match conference.

Maguire, Sancho and Fred have joined the existing absentee list that included Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw.

In the ongoing season, Cavani has missed at least 26 games due to various injuries, according to Tranfermarkt. His latest injury was a calf issue that he sustained in March end and has missed six games due to that and his return timeline is still not known.

Similar to Cavani, even Pogba is recovering from a calf injury that he picked up in April and as a result, the Frenchman has missed five games. Earlier in the season, Pogba was ruled out for three months after suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with the French national side in November.

"And apart from that we have Harry Maguire who is not available. He has some issues with his knee, not a big thing – some niggle in his knee. He hasn't been training, neither yesterday nor today. Paul obviously, Fred, Edinson, Luke Shaw, and Jadon – Jadon is ill, he has had tonsillitis since yesterday, couldn't train today, and will also be not available tomorrow," added Rangnick in the same conference.
