Premier League Rumors: Alisson Becker Progressing Well During Soccer Hiatus
KEY POINTS
- Alisson back in training for Liverpool
- Alisson is recovering well from hip injury
- Liverpool awaiting fate of football season
The forced break brought about by the coronavirus has been a bane for fans but a big help to players who are dealing with injuries. There are several names to mention, most who would have unlikely returned this season depending on the severity of their injury.
One player who could have returned in time to help Liverpool is Alisson Becker. The 27-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper is reportedly back in training after sitting out several games due to a hip injury, Goal.com reported. Becker suffered the injury during training before the Reds fell to Chelsea 2-0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup on March 3. He has already made a full recovery and is already back in training.
The hip injury forced Alisson to sit out the final three matches of Liverpool before the 2019-20 season was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Brazilian out, Adrian was tasked to fill in for him against the Blues and Bournemouth. The Spaniard drew a lot of flak for costly errors that saw Liverpool crash out of the competition.
The lull allowed Becker to step up his rehabilitation, following a strict program from his home as guided by Liverpool's staff. An update on the Brazilian was provided by coach John Achterberg on the club's official website.
"[Alisson] sent videos, doing some jumping and exercises. Obviously, we were working with him until the lockdown and he was fit," Achterberg said.
"Now it's for him to maintain it in the house, like the other goalkeepers. They all get their programmes from the fitness department so they will do the job and the work to try to stay as fit as they can, like all the other players as well," he added.
Becker is one of several players who are benefitting from the lull as the state of the current season remains unknown. The original plan was to finish the current season before starting a new one, but it appears the COVID-19 outbreak may force league officials to alter that plan.
Before the outbreak, Liverpool was well on its way of being crowned Premier League champions. Some also believe that the Reds should be crowned champions, likely because they are 25 points clear at the top of the league and six points away from a first title triumph in three decades.
