KEY POINTS

  • Fernandes former teams battling previous contract add-ons
  • FIFA investigating Fernandes case
  • Manchester United not involved in Sampdoria, Sporting dispute

The past seems to be catching up with Bruno Fernandes with former teams disputing some loose ends of his previous deals. Sampdoria and Sporting CP are now embroiled in a financial battle with the former alleging that they are owed money tied up to the moves for the 25-year-old midfielder.

In a way, it appears the case of Fernandes is somehow similar to that of Philippe Coutinho. It involved add-on clauses in the deal struck back in 2017 when Sporting took in Fernandes. But as most know, the Portuguese footballer was sent to Manchester United in January for roughly £47 million. But it appears the part of that proceeds of the deal belongs to Sampdoria, Goal.com reported.

When Sporting signed Fernandes in 2017, there was allegedly a sell-on clause where Sampdoria should get 10 percent, ESPN reported. If true, this means that The Blue-circled should be paid £4 million as a result of Fernandes transfer to Old Trafford. That fee has not been paid and now Sampdoria is contesting that matter with FIFA.

FIFA confirmed that the complaint was formally lodged with them on Apr. 3, 2020 concerning the financial obligations included in the contract for Fernandes. Investigations are ongoing and there have been no updates as of this writing. But the only thing clear so far is that the Red Devils are in no way liable for any further payments. The problem is primarily between Sampdoria and Sporting. Sporting is denying any wrongdoing and alleges they do not have any financial obligation to Sampdoria.

Fernandes has been doing well since arriving at Old Trafford, already scoring twice and issuing three assists in five Premier League appearances. Between United and Sporting, there are also add-ons in place. This includes the Red Devils needing to pay the Lions roughly $1 million for every five starts until he reaches 25 starts.

Aside from that, there are further financial obligations United will have to fulfill. That includes paying $5.4 million to Sporting if the team qualifies for the Champions League in the next five seasons and another $5.4 million if Fernandes wins the PFA Player of the Year award or reaches the top three of Ballon d'Or. It appears Sampdoria is expecting to get part of those add-ons.
