KEY POINTS

  • PSG consideing Umtiti to replace Silva
  • Silva not yet 100-percent sure exiting PSG
  • Umtiti not interested in leaving Barcelona

A reality that Paris Saint-Germain may need to face heading into the next transfer window is that Thiago Silva could be leaving the team. With that in mind, Les Parisiens is already preparing for the inevitable and already has a replacement in mind. He goes by the name of Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona.

According to Onze Mundial via Diario Sport, PSG is considering the French international to take the place of Silva. The Brazilian defender's contract will run out this summer and a new deal has yet to be in place. But there are claims that Silva plans to walk away and test the market alongside Layvin Kurzawa and Thomas Meunier - two players who also have expiring deals.

The potential of Silv, Kurzawa, and Meunier will severely paralyze the defense of Les Rouge et Bleu. Landing Umtiti could make sense although it will also depend if the French defender is open to leaving Barca. In another report from Diario Sport, Umtiti was more concerned about fighting for his spot in the first team. The 26-year-old believes that Quique Setien has the utmost confidence in him, raising his chances of keeping his spot.

Aside from that, Umtiti is under contract until 2023. To pluck him out of Barca, PSG would have to pay the termination clause roughly worth $32 million. There is a chance that Blaugranes could renegotiate that pact and up their asking price.

Sporting director Leonard is reportedly keen on getting the French international but doing so is unlikely to be easy. Further, Umtiti has shown no signs of wanting to leave Barca. Several teams have expressed interest in the center-back but none seem close to convincing him to make the switch. Among the teams who could use someone like him include Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

Despite the interest, it will be interesting if PSG can pull off something for the French footballer. It all depends on whether Silva and company will indeed bolt Paris SG. Most teams are facing financial difficulties, meaning a move out of Parc des Princes may not prove beneficial for Silva. A possible scenario would be to see him staying for at least a year if the offers pitched to him are far from what he is expecting.
