KEY POINTS

  • Solskjaer is saving up for Sancho and Grealish
  • The Red Devils are placing transfer targets on hold
  • Red Devils will restart deals once Ighalo's loan expires

Manchester United is slowing down a bit as far as taking new players. Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels that he has enough players to survive the remainder of the season, a move that could save United from further expenses. As most know, clubs are trying to curb down on spending due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Red Devils may have other things in mind like saving up for bigger targets by the next transfer window.

As mentioned in a previous post, United has its eyes on Jadon Sancho. But it appears that the 20-year-old winger is not the only one. on Solskjaer's radar. Jack Grealish is another target in mind. The 24-year-old who is currently playing for Aston Villa is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford. However, no formal talks have taken place. That could come near the end of 2020 or by January 2021. This would be about the time when Ighalo's loan deal will run out.

Contrary to initial claims, it appears Ighalo's new deal does not include a buyout clause. Previously, there were suggestions that Shanghai Shenhua had inserted that clause with hopes of selling the Nigerian outright as rumored before the COVID-19 pandemic. If that is the case, it indicates that Solskjaer could be broadening his options. Ighalo performed well filling up for Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford early this year. The landscape is different moving forward with both players possibly returning from injury.

Hence, Ighalo's extended stay at Old Trafford is not expected to be an easy one. There is a chance that United could try and buy the Nigerian if he continues his brilliant run. But if he falters, Solskjaer is expected to turn to either Grealish or Sancho. Both will not come cheap. Sancho will cost roughly $125 million while the asking price for Grealish is about $101 million, The Mirror reported.

Other names reportedly monitored by United include Harry Kane and Moussa Dembele. Werner was previously mentioned but no longer available. The German striker is believed to be headed to Chelsea by the next transfer window. The Red Devils never made a formal offer to RB Leipzig for Werner's services.

Though United has not been spared from financial issues, Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward reportedly got a $175 million loan that will be added to the club's $112 million cash reserves. This could be more than enough to secure the services of both Grealish and Sancho unless something changes along the way.
