KEY POINTS

  • Willian will play for Chelsea until the end of the domestic season
  • Pedro unlikely to play on for Blues
  • Willian future could be determined in the following months

Willian Borges da Silva has agreed to a short-term deal with Chelsea FC, something that will keep the Brazilian in Stamford Bridge until the end of the domestic season. The development comes a bit of a surprise considering Willian and Pedro Rodriguez were previous hesitant of agreeing to a short-term deal. The reason behind that is that both were allegedly wary of getting injured and jeopardizing their future come the summer.

According to Goal.com, Willian has agreed in principle to remain with the Blues until the end of the domestic season. The Brazilian’s contract was set to expire on June 30. This should take some load off the shoulders of Frank Lampard, at least until the end of Chelsea’s campaign this year. The story will be different next season.

Willian wants a three-year deal but Chelsea was only willing to give him a two-year pact. Also, this was the wish of the Brazilian before the COVID-19 pandemic entered the picture. With most clubs experiencing financial difficulties, it remains to be seen if Chelsea or other clubs interested in Willian will offer the same deal. There are teams interested in Willian such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.

With FIFA encouraging teams to try and work something out with players on expiring deals for the rest of the season, the Blues now have one less player to worry about. However, it was not mentioned if Willian will still be around when Chelsea competes in the Champions League in August.

Also, there is another player that needs addressing. Chelsea will try to convince Pedro to play on for another month although there will be some complications ahead. Pedro is set to join Roma next season, agreeing to a pre-contract with the Serie A club. The pre-contract will be the problem, something placed ahead of Pedro’s impending free transfer. Willian has not come to terms with any team for the 2020-21 season.

Hence, the case of Pedro is not looking good and the 32-year-old holds low chances of playing on due to a technicality. But anything can happen such as an agreement between the Blues and Roma.

For Willian, it could be a chance to mend ties if he and Blues can work out an acceptable solution on his contract. The Brazilian is aware of the governing conditions caused by COVID-19 although he did not mention softening his next contract demands. That should be a footnote to watch moving forward.
