Pride Month: Facebook Adds New LGBTQ Features To Site, Messenger To Help Users Celebrate June

Facebook is rolling out a set of features to help users celebrate Pride Month to the fullest, it said in a release Monday. The update is an addition to the features added to Instagram last week.

The month of June traditionally has been celebrated as Pride Month for those in the LGBTQ —lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer — community since the 1969 clash at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Police officers raided the gay club for violating liquor licensing laws. The raid turned violent when patrons and onlookers saw police arresting members of the community. A riot erupted and spread to surrounding streets, fueled by months of frustration from the gay community over unfair policing, according to History.com.

Former presidents have declared June “Pride Month,” including President Barack Obama who declared it as recently as last year. President Donald Trump has yet to do the same or acknowledge the celebration.

Facebook is doing its part to help people celebrate and show support. During the month of June there will be a few new features available on user timelines.

There will be a new rainbow frame to use on your profile picture. Facebook said it will be wishing users a happy Pride and inviting them to use the rainbow frame, which will start rolling out June 11 and will be available for the rest of the month. To access the frame users can either tap “edit” on their profile pictures or they can click here.

Facebook will also be adding a “Pride” reaction to the reaction selection on the site. The reaction is a temporary little rainbow flag. You can select this by tapping and holding the “like” button and then selecting the flag if you’re on mobile, or by hovering over “like” and selecting the pride reaction if you’re on the web version. Users will start seeing this reaction beginning Friday. You can also like this Facebook page to gain access to the reaction.

There will also be new frames and filters in the camera feature of the app. On the mobile app, if you’re on your homepage and swipe your screen to the right you’ll open the in-app camera. Select the little magic wand at the bottom of the page and the effects will appear. This will be rolling out to users immediately and will be available for the full month of June for users looking to share their Pride in their stories.

In the Messenger app there also are stickers and frames for users to express their pride in conversations with friends. These are available now under the stickers section of the app and in the Messenger in-app camera.
