The royals release Christmas cards every year that give their fans a glimpse of their family. The Prince and Princess of Wales’ Christmas card in 1988 featured Prince William and Prince Harry twinning in striped blue shirts with collar, khaki pants and burgundy shoes.

Both boys are standing in a fence with Princess Diana supporting them at their back. Meanwhile, Prince Charles is awkwardly distant from the trio.

The netizens recently noticed Prince Charles distance from his wife and kids.

“Body language tells a story,” one netizen wrote.

“Her with the kids and Charles alone,” another user commented.

Despite the Prince of Wales’ distance, some still find the photo a picture of a happy family since Prince Charles, Princess Diana and Prince William were all smiles at the camera. Only Prince Harry looked serious for he seemed to be struggling with his position.

“They were perfect! What a lovely family,” one netizen commented.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had a fairytale-like wedding. Unfortunately, their love story didn’t have a happy ending. Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their separation in 1992 and were officially divorced in 1996.

Following Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ split, the People’s Princess was banned from every royal occasion and only Queen Elizabeth II could enforce an order to allow her presence to an official event. But in 1993, Princess Diana called the Queen and informed her that she will attend the state banquet for Portugal President Mario Soares at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen couldn’t bring herself to tell Princess Diana that she was not welcome to the event because she was frightened of her influence on Prince William and Prince Harry. Her Majesty was also “frightened over the future which she senses belongs to Diana.”

However, according to Richard Kay and Geoffrey Levy, the Queen actually invited Princess Diana to the event without informing the other members of the royal family in hopes that the Prince and Princess of Wales would reconcile. However, Queen Elizabeth II’s move only infuriated Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Queen Mother.
