Their affair is considered old news these days and the drama surrounding their relationship seems to have faded in the 14 years since they officially wed. However, that doesn’t mean that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ relationship didn’t once spark fear and cause serious doubts about whether they would lead to the downfall of the monarchy.

In old footage from the 2017 documentary “Royal Stories—Episode 5: Camilla Parker-Bowles,” via Express UK, it’s revealed by biographer Anthony Holden that there were concerns of what a marriage between Charles and Camilla would mean for the monarchy’s future, as their affair, while he was still married to Princess Diana, was a major scandal.

“If he goes for marriage with Mrs. Parker Bowles as a future queen consort, he’s going to throw the monarchy into serious doubt,” he says in the documentary.

The couple’s affair was blasted by the public leading up to his divorce from Diana, including by the Princess of Wales herself in a famous television interview, and after her sudden and shocking death one year after her marriage ended, there were concerns over how the royal couple’s relationship would be perceived. However, over time, things seemed to be generally more accepted, leading up to their marriage in a civil ceremony in 2005.

However, it wasn’t just the public who needed to accept the pair’s relationship, as Queen Elizabeth also needed to approve of her son’s eventual Queen Consort. It was previously revealed that her apparent “grudging” acceptance of the couple led to their getting a more positive reception from the public. After allegedly avoiding her for several years but accepting an invitation to an event for the King of Greece that she knew Parker Bowles would be in attendance at, it was widely perceived that Queen Elizabeth was no longer shying away from the pair’s relationship.

Of course, some do still have some doubts about the pair, and there are even concerns about whether or not Camilla, who opted not to take the title of Princess of Wale after her marriage in honor of the late Diana, should accept a Queen Consort title when her husband becomes king. 73 percent of respondents in a recent poll over the issue stated that they believed she didn’t deserve it.
