Prince Charles will reportedly have no choice but to accept the throne from Queen Elizabeth II when the time comes.

On the online forum site Quora, royal fans shared their thoughts on whether or not they think Prince Charles could decline the throne despite being Queen Elizabeth II’s heir.

Dave Rowlands, a monarchist and royal history buff, said that the Duke of Cornwall cannot do so.

“Strictly speaking, no. The line of succession is determined by Statute Law and doesn’t take into account the views of the individual concerned – only another act of Parliament change it,” he wrote.

Frank Martin, who has an MS degree in applied mathematics, said that Prince Charles could only petition the parliament to pass an act by bypassing him. Rob Cover, an assistant professor at the University of Western Australia, said that there is no existing legal mechanism for a British heir to the throne to renounce it beforehand.

“The only option to renounce the throne while Elizabeth II is alive is in an Act of Parliament subsequent to the agreement of all Commonwealth Realms… This Act would require an amendment to the Act of Settlement 1701 and several subsequent acts that outline the succession,” he explained.

Jen Burns also said that Prince Charles is the heir to the throne so he has no reason to decline it. However, sitting on the throne wouldn’t happen anytime soon for the future King.

A source just said that Her Majesty would never abdicate in favor of Prince Charles, and she will also most likely die while still the monarch. Royal author Tina Brown told CBS “This Morning” that the Queen won’t step down because she doesn’t believe that this is about the office but an incarnation.

Brown also reiterated the fact that the Queen once took an oath at Westminster Abbey where she said that she will dedicate all the days of her life to her reign.
