Prince Charles Considered Marrying This Catholic Woman And It’s Not Princess Diana
Prince Charles considered marrying a Catholic woman before tying the knot with Princess Diana in 1981.
In the documentary “Prince William: Royalty In My Family,” Prince Charles almost wed Princess Astrid of Luxembourg because the monarchy considered her a suitable match for the heir to the throne. However, the princess was a Catholic.
But the press seemed to favor Princess Diana, and they dubbed her as the main romantic interest of Prince Charles. After Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot in 1981, Princess Astrid wed Archduke Carl Christian of Austria a year later.
Meanwhile, even though royal fans saw Princess Diana as the perfect bride for Prince Charles because she was a virgin, their marriage was actually not a fairytale. After years of arguments, affairs and other controversies, the Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation in 1992.
At that time, the New York Times published an article on the newspaper with the title, “Charles and Diana Are Separating ‘Amicably.’” A photo of Princess Diana and Prince Charles separately appears on the front page of the publication.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana remained legally married until 1996 when their divorce was officially finalized. Prior to their divorce, Princess Diana sat down for a controversial interview with Martin Bashir for Panorama.
In their discussion, Princess Diana confirmed that Prince Charles cheated on her with Camilla Parker Bowles. She also said that there were three of them in the marriage that’s why it felt crowded.
Bashir asked Princess Diana if Prince Charles was having a relationship with someone else at that time. “With a husband who loved someone else, yes,” Princess Diana replied.
One year after the divorce, Princess Diana passed away following a fatal car crash in Paris. Her then-boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed, also died in the same accident.
Prince Charles went on to wed Camilla in a civil ceremony in 2005, and they are still together at the moment. And there are reports that when Prince Charles is crowned king, Camilla will be known as queen consort.
