Prince Charles Heartbreak: Queen Elizabeth ‘Distanced’ Herself After Son Put ‘Personal Gratification’ Before ‘Duty’

Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth are reportedly not very close. But the two royals’ relationship became even more distant after the heir to the throne decided to marry Camilla Parker Bowles.

In an article he wrote for The Telegraph, Andrew Alderson revealed that the Queen distanced herself from the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. Even though Her Majesty gave her blessing to the royal couple, she still couldn’t help but think that Prince Charles put his personal gratification before his duty, which is something that she couldn’t forgive.

The Queen was also reportedly lukewarm about the marriage because she feared that it could tarnish the British monarchy.

“The courtiers said yesterday that Prince Charles's private office had been outmaneuvered by Buckingham Palace and that Sir Robin Janvrin, the Queen's private secretary, had tried to protect her from becoming involved in a ‘town hall marriage’ which demeaned her own status. Robin is very clever. As soon as he sensed controversy, he did what he always does and wrapped the Queen in cotton wool to make sure that she didn't get damaged by events,” Alderson wrote.

He also said that Janvrin’s intervention was symptomatic of the Queen’s long-standing concern over her son and Camilla’s relationship. However, it didn’t take the Queen very long to accept Camilla into the royal family.

During the royal couple’s wedding reception, Her Majesty reportedly gave a touching toast that featured a racing metaphor.

“I have two important announcements to make. The first is that the Hedge hunter has won the Grand National. They have overcome Becher’s Brook and The Chair and all kinds of other terrible obstacles… They have come through, and I’m very proud and wish them well… My son is home and dry with the woman he loves,” she said.

Today, Camilla has become well-loved by the monarch. The Duchess of Cornwall is also being groomed to become Prince Charles’ queen when he ascends the throne.
