Prince Charles Said Princess Diana Split Was ‘Deeply Regrettable’ After ‘Camillagate’ Scandal

Prince Charles found his split from Princess Diana to be “deeply regrettable.”

Before the Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation, there had already been rumors that Prince Charles had an affair with his ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles, who was also married. In fact, following their split, Princess Diana blamed their affair for the breakdown of her and Prince Charles’ marriage, saying that it was difficult because “there were three of us.”

In BBC’s documentary “Charles: The Destiny of a Prince,” the Prince of Wales agreed to sit down for an intimate interview and opened up about his relationship with Princess Diana. According to Prince Charles, he tried to set things right, but it just didn’t work out.

“It’s not something I went into this marriage with the intention of this happening,” Prince Charles said. “I have, it sounds self righteous to say so, but I have on the whole, tried to get it right constantly.”

According to Prince Charles, people always scrutinized him and added that when he married Princess Diana, he was not cynical. He really tried his best and did the right thing for everybody.

“It is a deeply regrettable thing to happen,” he added.

Matthew Kirkham, a journalist for Express, said that prior to this interview, the press had already leaked a series of recorded conversations between the Prince of Wales and the current Duchess of Cornwall that exposed their affair. It was dubbed as the “Camillagate” scandal by the tabloids.

Later that same year, Buckingham Palace confirmed Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marital issues. In December, their separation was announced.

In November of that year, Princess Diana and Prince Charles flew to South Korea for an official visit. However, during the trip, it appeared that they couldn’t stand each other and were ignoring one another.

According to James Whitaker, a royal correspondent for Mirror, the Prince and Princess of Wales were supposed to present an image of a loving couple, but they were stony-faced. There was no physical contact when they were together. In fact, they were like two strangers.

It was Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s last trip together. After a few weeks, the palace announced their split. The photographers who saw them during their trip to South Korea were not surprised by the announcement.
