Prince Charles Was ‘Profoundly Affectionate’ Towards This Royal; It’s Not The Queen

Prince Charles was profoundly affectionate of another female royal, but it’s not his mom, Queen Elizabeth II.

Alice Scarsi, a journalist for Express, claimed that Prince Charles was devastated when his grandmother passed away on March 30, 2002. Following Queen Mother’s death, Prince Charles said that his grandmother meant everything to him.

“And I had dreaded, dreaded this moment. Above all, she saw the funny side in everything and we laughed until we cried. And oh, how I shall miss those laughs,” Prince Charles said.

When he was still a young boy, the future king was always left under the care of his grandparents because his parents were busy with their official engagements. And when the Queen and Prince Philip went on a six-month tour of the Commonwealth in 1953, Prince Charles and Princess Anne lived with their grandparents.

Meanwhile, Queen Mother also had the same love for Prince Charles. In 1954, she wrote a letter praising his grandson, which was addressed to the Queen.

“You may find Charles much older in a very endearing way. He is intensely affectionate. And loves you and Philip most tenderly. I am sure that he will always be a very loving and enjoyable child to you both,” Queen Mary wrote.

But Prince Charles and Queen Mother’s closeness also triggered speculations that the Queen was an absent mother especially when her children were still very young. Gill Knappett, the author of “Charles: Prince of Wales” noted this in his book.

“Prince Charles and Princess Anne, confined to a sheltered childhood in the nursery and schoolroom of Buckingham Palace and regime led by nannies and governesses, were inevitably close as they grew up. Particularly in the early years of her daughter’s reign, the Queen Mother had filled a gap when Charles and Anne’s parents were absent; the new Queen worked tirelessly, her royal duties have to take precedence over her young family. Charles’ closest relationship with a grandparent was with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who adored young children and was happy to indulge in them,” the author wrote.
