Prince Harry Almost Quit Royal Family Before Marrying Meghan Markle; Duchess ‘Doesn’t Understand’

Prince Harry almost quit the royal family even before he married Meghan Markle.

During her interview on BBC Radio 4’s "Today" program, royal author Angela Levin detailed the conversation she had with Prince Harry years ago. She said that the Duke of Sussex once told her about almost quitting the royal family because of the press.

“When Harry spoke to me, he said he was totally fed up with living in a goldfish bowl. After he came back from Afghanistan [in 2008], he felt so dreadful – because someone leaked where he was, so it was too dangerous for him and other army people – he would get out of the royal family,” Levin said.

However, Prince Harry’s departure from the royal family didn’t push through after he realized that his grandfather, Prince Philip, could no longer take on more responsibilities. At that time, Prince Harry asked the Duke of Edinburgh if he could take over some of his charities, and he agreed.

Other than helping Prince Philip, Prince Harry also told Levin that one of his goals is to be of service to Queen Elizabeth. Markle’s husband also knows that his next duty was to help out his older brother, Prince William.

But after Prince Harry met Markle, he became dedicated to their relationship. And he has become even more dedicated now that they have an 8-month-old son together.

“Meghan mentioned working as a team with Prince Harry at the engagement interview, she did with the BBC – but it seems that she doesn’t really like teams after all. The main problem is that she is a celebrity and Prince Harry is a royal. There is a huge difference in that,” Levin said.

The royal author went on to say that Markle doesn’t seem to understand what being a royal is because of her background as an actress. The Duchess of Sussex doesn’t also want to follow duty and protocol.

At the end of the day, the couple’s decision to step back from their royal duties could eventually affect Prince Harry even more.

Earlier this month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said that they want to be financially independent of the royal family. The royal couple will also be living in London and North America.
