  • Buckingham Palace announced early Thursday that the 96-year-old monarch had been placed under medical supervision
  • The palace confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday afternoon

Prince Harry did not get to say a final goodbye before his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away Thursday afternoon at the age of 96, according to a report.

Members of the royal family rushed to Scotland to be by Queen Elizabeth's side after doctors became concerned for her health and placed her under medical supervision Thursday.

However, the 37-year-old Duke of Sussex did not make it to his grandmother's Scottish estate Balmoral in time to see her before she died, the New York Post reported. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

Prince Harry is reportedly now at Balmoral without his wife, Meghan Markle.

He was reportedly supposed to head to the Scottish castle with Markle, but representatives for the 41-year-old Duchess of Sussex later announced that plans had changed due to the "fluid situation," according to the outlet.

Unnamed sources told the Post that there was "nothing nefarious" about the former actress' decision to not proceed to Balmoral.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were already staying at their U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor when news of the queen's condition broke.

The couple arrived in the U.K. Saturday to attend the One Young World Summit in Manchester, England, Monday. They then headed to Germany Tuesday for the Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023 "One Year to Go" celebration before returning to the U.K. to attend Thursday's WellChild Awards in London.

It appeared that Prince Harry was not the only royal who did not arrive early enough to say goodbye to Queen Elizabeth, according to the New York Post.

His older brother Prince William, 40, was spotted driving an official Range Rover and arriving at Balmoral Thursday afternoon. The Duke of Cambridge came with his disgraced uncle Prince Andrew, but his wife Kate Middleton stayed at their home in Adelaide Cottage with their three children, according to the outlet.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, were also present at the estate, along with Queen Elizabeth's eldest children, the new monarch King Charles III and Princess Anne.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving monarch in British history, reigning for 70 years after ascending the throne in 1952.

Following his mother's death, King Charles III said in a statement obtained by the BBC that Queen Elizabeth II's passing was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the globe.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother," he said. "I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

The King added that in this period of mourning, the royal family would be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held."
