Prince Harry Considers Relinquishing Royal Title After Platinum Jubilee Treatment: Royal Correspondent
KEY POINTS
- Prince Harry is allegedly planning to have his Duke of Sussex title removed after the Platinum Jubilee
- The Duke of Sussex probably considered relinquishing the title to move forward without royal association
- Prince Harry's team might disagree because the "Duke and Duchess of Sussex" is a big seller of books, podcasts and TV shows
Prince Harry allegedly wanted to get rid of his royal title, the Duke of Sussex, according to a royal correspondent.
Neil Sean, a royal and entertainment reporter for NBC News, MSNBC and Access Hollywood, gave an update about Prince Harry on his YouTube channel "Neil Sean's Daily News Headlines." He heard from good sources that Prince Harry wanted to relinquish his Duke of Sussex title.
"It's interesting, isn't it because you know, we don't really use the title Duke and Duchess of Sussex," Sean added. "You know he's known as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. So, perhaps as an individual, as a brand, he knows that they could never take away the title 'Prince Harry' because that's the birth name, the birthright. But of course, Meghan Markle is known as Meghan Markle never really going to be known as the Duchess of Sussex."
Sean noted that his team would probably counteract because those who were paying them knew that the title "Duke and Duchess of Sussex is a big seller, particularly on books, podcast[s] and TV shows." He added that Markle and her PR team stated she liked to use the title. However, it seemed that her husband was done with it after the way they were treated at the Platinum Jubilee.
In the earlier part of the video, Sean claimed that Prince Harry was "a bit huff" following the royal treatment they received when they flew back to the U.K. for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Prince Harry reportedly didn't feel he was given the recognition he deserved, and Sean said it was understandable in "many respects" because Prince Harry "thought there was going to be a bigger platform for him."
Royal biographer Christopher Andersen echoed the same opinion about the royal treatment the Sussexes received. According to the "Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan" author, Prince Harry and Markle expected a warmer welcome, but they were "sidelined" and even excluded from the royal balcony appearance.
"As ever, we have to say allegedly, it's seemingly that the firehead that is Prince Harry truly believes that if it is the way forward, if this is the way for freedom and of course his expression and more importantly, the fact that he can move forward with his life without the shackles of the royal association, then perhaps, this is an idea that they all should be working to now," Sean continued.
The royal correspondent added that the royal family considered the same move after looking at the bigger picture. Now that Prince Harry allegedly wanted the same — to relinquish the title — Sean said it would be a PR battle on who would look best after it.
Several commented on Sean's video, with one saying the people of Sussex wanted Prince Harry and Markle to be stripped of the title. Another speculated that Prince Harry probably learned about the royal family's plan about stripping him of the title, so he wanted to make the first move.
"Is this the real reason Neil, or is it because he heard the Royals were talking about it, so he got in first," another added. "I hadn't finished my comment when you said exactly what I was thinking."
