Prince Harry and his stepmother Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall showed signs of a tense relationship during engagements over the last few years, a body language expert has claimed.
Judi James recently shared her analysis of the relationship between Prince Charles' second wife and youngest son based on the royals' body language in photos taken of them during various public appearances over the years.
She claimed the photos showed that there was clear "friction" between Prince Harry and Duchess Camilla.
"Like his brother William, Harry appeared to adopt a philosophical view of the woman once called ‘The Rottweiler’ and be willing to make verbal declarations of affection for her. However, this behavior seems to have been linked to and possibly dependent on his relationship with his father," James told Daily Mail. "It looks very much as though Harry needed an alienation from his father before he dropped some of the social niceties with Camilla."
The body language expert claimed that the Duke of Sussex "distanced" himself from the rest of the royal family in portraits taken for Prince Charles and Camilla's allegedly "tense" wedding in 2005.
"Harry and William performed their usual upbeat and fun-loving double act, with Harry clearly living up to his reputation as 'the joker prince,'" James noted. "However, he appears to be less keen on showing the face of grinning 'approval' when it comes to the official portraits."
She claimed that Prince William and Queen Elizabeth II's smiles in the portraits appear "too forced to be authentic" but show "a desire to be seen to be sociable and polite." However, she suggested that Prince Harry's smile was "low-effort and barely visible," appearing to hint at a lack of enthusiasm or open approval.
James also cited a photo taken during Trooping the Colour in 2015 that showed Prince Harry bending down slightly as he listens to Duchess Camilla asking a question.
The expert noted that Prince Harry's brow is "furrowed" and his smile is "non-existent" and that the duke did not make eye contact with his stepmother, suggesting that he tries to "avoid going beyond the levels of polite duty" when interacting with her.
However, for James, the distance between Duchess Camilla and Prince Harry was more evident during the Prince of Wales' 70th birthday patronage celebration in Buckingham Palace that took place just days after the duke's May 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle.
"The signals of simmering unhappiness and even resentment or anxiety are appearing obvious in Harry’s body language," James claimed. "He performs a tight mouth clamp that suggests anger, as well as a frown. His bounce has gone and his hands are clasped behind his back."
In February, the Queen announced that she wants Camilla to be known as "queen consort" when Prince Charles takes the throne in the future.
Kate Middleton and Prince William responded publicly by "liking" the Queen's statement on Instagram via their own Duke and Duchess of Cambridge account. However, Prince Harry has not released a statement or publicly addressed the announcement.
Just days after the Queen made the announcement, Prince Harry said he felt "obligated" to continue the work of his mother Princess Diana in tackling HIV and the stigma around it.
Prince Charles previously married the late Princess Diana in 1981 before they welcomed their sons William and Harry. They separated in 1992 after countless rumors of marital issues, and their divorce was announced four years later.
In 1997, one year after her divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana died at age 36 in a car crash. Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla announced their plans to wed seven years after Princess Diana's tragic passing.
