- Prince Harry's U.K. visit was expected to be brief as he wanted to "get back" to Meghan Markle as soon as he can, a report says
Prince Harry may have flown back to California to reunite with his wife, Meghan Markle, just a week after arriving in the U.K., according to a report.
The Duke of Sussex returned to England last weekend for the unveiling of a statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace in London Thursday, on what would have been her 60th birthday. Just a day after the memorial, Prince Harry's car was spotted leaving Windsor and heading to the airport, Daily Mail reported.
In photos obtained by the outlet, a black 2019 Volkswagen Caravelle was driven from Frogmore Cottage, the Duke of Sussex's home in the U.K., and to the tarmac of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport in London. The car followed closely behind a police escort.
The car was part of a convoy that picked Prince Harry up when he landed in the country a week ago, the outlet noted.
Prince Harry had quarantined at Frogmore Cottage before being released on day five following a negative COVID-19 test result.
It's not known if the Duke of Sussex had met his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who returned to Windsor from Scotland Thursday, while he was in his home country. The monarch, Prince Charles, Kate Middleton and other senior members of the royal family did not attend the statue unveiling.
Instead, Prince Harry and Prince William were joined by Princess Diana’s siblings, Earl Charles Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.
"The royals wanted to keep it very personal and not have many family members in attendance since that would be a takeaway from the special moment," an unnamed source told Us Weekly. "This wasn’t a last-minute decision; it was decided on a few weeks ago that the other royals wouldn’t be attending. Meghan [Markle] just had her baby, [Duchess] Kate watched from afar with the kids, and same with the Queen. Charles had said he didn’t want to be a distraction."
Prince Harry's stay in the U.K. was expected to be brief, with an unnamed source telling Us Weekly last week, "It’ll be a fleeting visit. He’ll be in and out." According to the insider, he wanted to "get back" to his wife as soon as possible, especially since they had just welcomed their second child, Lili, on June 4.
"While the brothers are uniting for the unveiling, sadly, they won’t get to spend much time together," the source added of Prince Harry and Prince William.
Meanwhile, Markle's ex-diplomat uncle, Michael "Mike" Markle, died this week at the age of 82 after battling Parkinson's disease and suffering falls in recent years, Daily Mail reported.
Michael, who was the older brother of the duchess' dad Thomas Markle Sr., claimed he helped the former actress land an internship as a junior press officer at the American embassy in Argentina when she was 20. In 2018, he admitted that he was upset and surprised that he didn't get an invite to Prince Harry and Markle's royal wedding.
"I’ve done more for her than others… I’ve probably done more for her than most have. I personally talked to the ambassador in Argentina for her," Michael told Daily Mail at the time. "I thought I would [get an invitation], but anyhow, I didn’t hear from her."
