The Duke of Sussex made a surprise appearance at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Veterans Day. The 41-year-old royal toured the USS Arizona Memorial on Friday, People reported.
The battleship was bombed by Japanese forces in December 1941, killing over 1,100 crew members. The attack drove the United States to enter World War II.
Meghan Markle's husband visited the memorial in a personal capacity. The USS Arizona Memorial on the island of Oahu is a short flight from his home in Montecito, California, where he lives with his wife and two children, son Archie, 3, and daughter Lilibet, 1.
"He kind of approached us," Dan Conover, who was also touring the USS Arizona on the same day, told People about his encounter with Prince Harry.
"I moved out of his way because he's royalty, I figured I'd let him do his thing. He basically gave me a greeting," Conover, 23, explained. "He was very respectful and courteous and nice. I moved out of his way, and he kind of patted me on the back and said, 'You're all good mate.' It was a simple interaction, but he was very nice and courteous and respectful."
The eyewitness added that an expert accompanying Prince Harry explained the basic things to the royal. The outing was reportedly emotional for Prince William's brother, who had served in the British Army for 10 years and completed two tours of Afghanistan before leaving his royal duties in 2020.
Prince Harry held three honorary military titles — Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving, Royal Navy Command.
Queen Elizabeth stripped her grandson of his military appointments after moving away from his royal duties. Last month, King Charles took over one of Prince Harry's former military roles. The new monarch is now the Captain General of the Royal Marines.
"It is the greatest possible pleasure to assume the role of your Captain General," the monarch said in a statement, Us Weekly reported. "I am exceptionally proud to follow in the footsteps of so many members of my family over the last three-and-a-half centuries, all of whom held the role with a deep sense of admiration."
