Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wrapped up their senior duties in the royal family after attending the Commonwealth Day service. Although the couple is now free to live a more private life with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, it will come at a “considerable cost.

According to a royal expert, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal exit will be a difficult transition for the couple, who will lose their special privileges.

Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk that Prince Harry and Meghan may have lost sight of some of the positive memories they made while working as full-time royals. “As Megxit approaches, it is also a time of sadness,” he said.

“Harry and Meghan have an intense dislike of the press, but they should also remember the joy with which their engagement, and then their marriage was greeted by both the people and the press in Britain and also around the Commonwealth.”

On Jan. 8, the couple announced their plan to step back from their royal duties and become financially independent. However, Fitzwilliams claimed their exit will expose how valuable the couple was to the royal family.

“As they achieve their independence, at a considerable cost, we might also reflect on what we’ve lost,” he explained.

When Meghan and Prince Harry were working with the royal family, Fitzwilliams claimed the couple appealed to a wide audience.

“Meghan, a biracial American divorcée was a charitable activist, who championed women’s empowerment and equality and potentially had enormous appeal to the young,” he said.

“In the Commonwealth, 60 percent are under 30, and the majority are persons of color who could now see the royal family as more representative both of a more diverse Britain and of the wider Commonwealth.”

Although Meghan and Harry’s exit announcement was met with mixed reactions, Fitzwilliams revealed many thought the 38-year-old would be the perfect addition to the royal family.

“Her articulacy, evident in her speech on women’s rights at the UN Women Conference, and her activism, her opposition to sexism at the age of 11 became famous, as well as her status as a fashion icon, as an actress, the red carpet was familiar to her,” he explained.

“All these things tended to indicate she would be an ideal partner for Harry, who is so keen to follow in Diana’s footsteps.”

However, the couple grew tired of the constant criticism from British tabloids and decided to step back from the royal spotlight to protect themselves and Archie.

Meghan and Prince Harry’s revised role is expected to undergo a 12 month review period by Queen Elizabeth.
