KEY POINTS

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will spend their Christmas away from the royal family
  • They are keeping the celebrations low-key
  • They will mark their first Christmas at their new California home

For the second year in a row, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be spending Christmas away from the royal family in the United Kingdom. And, they are keeping it “low-key.”

The Duke and the Duchess of Sussex will be marking their first Christmas in their new home in Montecito, California, where they moved during the pandemic lockdown. After briefly living in Canada and Los Angeles, the pair moved to a $14 million mansion, which is thought to be their permanent abode.

The royal couple and their 18-month-old son Archie will be spending their holiday at their home where they will be joined by Markle’s mother Doria Ragland, ET Online reported.

"The couple will be spending Christmas at home in California quietly with Archie and Doria [Ragland] joining them," a source told ET Online.

In addition, Meghan, along with her family, will spend time cooking some festive food items and favorite dishes.

"Meghan, who is an accomplished cook, will be preparing some of their favorite dishes with Harry and Doria pitching in,” the source added.

Earlier this month, the parents-of-one were spotted Christmas tree shopping. A Twitter user shared the details about their low-key outing for festive décor.

"Meghan and Prince Harry came into my work today and we sold them their Christmas tree," tweeted @imaJaaaaaames. "We had our lot empty when they got there - their agent promoted them a good time to come instead of us shutting it down. There was one family in there and their stoked little son ran through trees up to Harry and asked if he worked here not knowing who that is."

This will be the Sussex family’s second holiday season spent away from the British royal family. Last year, before they announced their exit from the family and stepped back from their duties as senior royals, the pair flew to Canada for holidays.

Meanwhile, back in the U.K., things will not be the same for Queen Elizabeth II and her family too. This year, the royals will be skipping their traditional Christmas celebrations at Sandringham Estate due to coronavirus restrictions. The queen and her husband Prince Philip will be spending the holiday season in isolation at Windsor Castle. There will be no large gatherings and lavish dinners as the family continues to stay apart even during the festive period.
