KEY POINTS

  • Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor now appears on the British royal family’s line of succession site
  • Baby Lili appears behind her older brother Archie and before Prince Andrew
  • The update came after a royal expert and several outlets pointed out the absence of her name

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, has been officially added to the royal line of succession.

On Monday, the official Royal.UK website was updated to show that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's second child is eighth in line to the British throne. The update comes seven weeks after Lili's birth in California on June 4.

Her older brother, Archie, 2, is currently seventh in line to Queen Elizabeth's throne, while her father is sixth.

Currently, Lilibet's grandfather, Prince Charles, is next in line to the throne, with Prince William behind him.

Above Prince Harry and Markle's children are their three royal cousins — Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3. Archie and Lili will slip further down the line of succession once Prince William and Middleton's children become parents, People noted.

Royal correspondent Omid Scobie, author of “Finding Freedom,” tweeted a screenshot of the website, which shows the names of Prince Andrew and his two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, after baby Lili's.

Markle doesn't appear on the list as she is not royal by birth. The same goes for Middleton and other royal spouses such as Mike Tindall and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

The legal basis for the line of succession was amended in 2013 to end the rule that automatically placed male heirs above their sisters in the line of succession, according to People. The change applied to royal children born after October 28, 2011, which is why Princess Charlotte was not overtaken by her younger brother Prince Louis when he was born in 2018.

The update came just a day after reports surfaced about Prince Harry and Markle's daughter's absence from the British royal family’s line of succession site.

ITV royal editor Chris Ship pointed out her absence during last week’s "Royal Rota" podcast episode, suggesting that the royal family may be "making a point." Her older brother Archie was added to the list just two weeks after Prince Harry and Markle welcomed him in May 2019.

“You have to got to ask what has taken them so long,” said Ship.

He continued, “All they have got to do is hit the paragraph button and put in a different number. They must have done it before. They did it for Archie. Clearly, they did it for Louis when he was born. And they have done it for some of the other children like August that have been born as well.”
