KEY POINTS

  • Prince Harry said Meghan Markle looked "beautiful" when she met his father King Charles for the first time
  • The Duke of Sussex briefed Markle to wear her hair down and put on little makeup for the meeting
  • Markle was reportedly caught unprepared when she first met Queen Elizabeth II

Prince Harry shared the details of his father King Charles and his now-wife Meghan Markle's first meeting in his book.

The Duke of Sussex revealed in his upcoming memoir, "Spare," how he made sure Markle would make a good impression on his father when he introduced her to Charles, 74, at Clarence House, Us Weekly reported.

"Meg looked beautiful," he wrote, noting that Markle wore a "full skirt, patterned with flowers."

The former "Suits" star reportedly wore her signature brunette tresses cascading over her shoulders, per Prince Harry's suggestion because "Pa likes it when women wear their hair down." Harry added that his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, also preferred the loose 'do and often commented on "[Princess] Kate's beautiful mane."

Prince Harry also advised Markle to wear "little" makeup because Charles "didn't approve of women who wore a lot."

"Meg and I had rehearsed this moment several times. For Pa, curtsy. Say, 'your royal highness' or 'sir,'" he said of the proper greeting protocol.

The Duke of Sussex told Markle to give his father a kiss if he "leans in" and a handshake if he doesn't. As for King Charles' wife Queen Consort Camilla, Prince Harry told her that a curtsy wasn't necessary, which reportedly shocked Markle, who asked him, "You sure?"

"I didn't think it appropriate," Prince Harry explained in his memoir.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex enjoyed a pleasant evening with King Charles and Camilla. Prince Harry recounted Markle talking about her two fur babies, Bogart and Guy, both rescues.

However, Markle's first meeting with the late Queen was vastly different. Prince Harry and the former actress were reportedly on their way to have lunch at Royal Lodge when they were informed that his grandmother had popped by the estate for a visit.

Markle was given a quick curtsy lesson by Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie's mom Sarah Ferguson, who was residing there, before she introduced herself to the Queen. Their meeting went well, but Prince Harry felt they were underdressed.

"I could see Meg regretting her jeans and black sweater," he wrote. "I was also regretting my shabby trousers. We didn't plan, I wanted to tell granny, but she was busy asking about Meg's visit."

Ahead of its release, extracts from Prince Harry's book have been published by outlets over the past few days, revealing some of its major bombshells.

Prince Harry claimed in his memoir that Prince William once physically attacked him during an argument over Markle and that his older brother and his sister-in-law Kate Middleton allegedly encouraged him to wear a Nazi uniform to a costume party in 2005.

The Duke of Sussex also revealed an "awkward moment" between his wife and Middleton when they made their first "fab four" public outing at the Royal Foundation Forum in February 2018. According to him, Markle borrowed Middleton's lip gloss when she forgot hers.

"Kate, taken aback, went into her handbag and reluctantly pulled out a small tube," Prince Harry wrote, Page Six reported. "Meg squeezed some onto her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced."
