Prince Harry ‘Should Be Appointed Ambassador To America’ For This Reason
Prince Harry should be appointed as ambassador to America in order to help boost global Britain, says senior Tory MP Tom Tugendhat.
Tugendhat, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, also said that the Duke of Sussex would cut through to the American public. Prince Harry is also a good candidate because his wife, Meghan Markle, is American.
“We could use someone like Harry, in somewhere like the US, to say – the UK is back. Having somebody who could really cut through would be one hell of an asset. He does have an American wife, and he served alongside US forces. The idea of representing his country is something he’s done a lot,” he said (via Daily Mail).
Prince Harry also worked in the army for 10 years, and he rose to the rank of captain. The Duke of Sussex also served two tours in Afghanistan. Tugendhat said that those in the military need diplomacy skills.
However, Tugendhat’s comments about making Prince Harry an ambassador to America was also met with a criticism. Andre Wood, the former British ambassador to Russia, said that giving Prince Harry the title could politicize the royals.
“I see no virtue for either Prince Harry or the government in sending him over. In fact, it risks politicizing him,” he said.
In related news, Prince Harry will be embarking on his first overseas tour with Markle starting Oct. 16. The royal couple will kick off their trip with a visit to Australia, and they will also head to New Zealand, Fiji, and the Kingdom of Tonga.
According to Forbes, the couple will take commercial flights between Australia and the United Kingdom, and their airfares will be paid by the Australian and New Zealand governments.
“Their Royal Highnesses have been invited to visit the Commonwealth Realms of Australia and New Zealand by the countries’ respective governments, and Fiji and Tonga at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This will be the Duke and Duchess’s first joint visit to these four countries,” a statement from the palace read.
Prince Harry and Markle’s overseas tour will wrap up on Oct. 31.
