Prince Philip considers one member of the royal family “the boss” and it’s not his wife, Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince Philip is known for being straightforward whenever he speaks. One time he referred to one of his children “the boss.”

According to Andrew Morton in his 1983 book “Andrew: The Playboy Prince,” the Duke of Edinburgh actually referred to the Duke of York as his “boss.” Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II welcomed Prince Andrew a decade after Princess Anne’s birth. Prince Andrew’s arrival in the royal family was deemed a source of great joy and pleasure to the members of the Firm. Although the Queen and Prince Philip were not that hands-on to the Prince of Wales and Royal Princess, their parenting improved with their third child. In fact, Prince Philip used to play mock bedtime boxing with his second son.

One time, Prince Andrew’s “boisterous” spirit had an unfortunate result when it left Prince Philip a “black eye.”

“During the horseplay, one of his right hooks got through and left Prince Philip with a real shiner that even the application of raw steak could not disguise,” Morton wrote.

“He was due at a film premiere that night and as he stepped out of the car he pointed to his black eye and said ruefully: ‘That was The Boss’.”

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh also made a significant change in their parenting after welcoming Prince Andrew. The couple decided that they would not expose him to the public eye as much as his older siblings Prince Charles and Princess Anne because they noticed its harmful effect especially to the Prince of Wales who was by nature very shy.

If Prince Philip’s boss was Prince Andrew, the Duke of Edinburgh is also the boss in their household. In the 2008 documentary “The Duke: Portrait of Prince Philip,” the duke’s behavior toward the Queen changed in closed doors. In public, Prince Philip submits to the Queen but once the doors are shut, he instantly becomes the boss and Her Majesty accepts this because she acknowledges that her husband wears the trousers at home.
