Prince Philip has a unique way of making sure that Queen Elizabeth II feels at ease whenever they are out in public.

Since Her Majesty doesn’t like to be around people that she doesn’t know, her husband tends to commit awkward gaffes so that the focus of the public will be on him and not on his wife. This way, the Queen would also feel at ease.

Royal author Adam Helliker previously revealed that the monarch can’t stand the silence that she encounters whenever she walks into the room. But by the looks of it, people stop and stare at the Queen for the simple reason that she’s the head of the monarchy.

“Ever wondered what the Queen feels like when she enters a room filled with people, knowing they’re all nervous about meeting her? Well, an RAF officer who served as an equerry discloses: ‘One summer day she asked me to join her on a walk at Balmoral… She talked about how irritating it was to go into a party and as she put it, watch people peel away, like the water parting as the bow of a ship plowed through it,’” he said.

“She said she always felt it would be lovely to just slip into a party, wandering around incognito, talking to anyone she felt like. But the thing that most irritated her was the ‘inevitable hush’ that always greeted her when they saw her walking in,” he added.

During such moments, the Duke of Edinburgh steps in and tries to break the ice. However, since Prince Philip has a dry sense of humor, he rarely gets it right. Daily Mail reporter Richard Kay said that Prince Philip always try to say the right thing but it doesn’t come outright.

As such, he has offended a ton of people by simply talking to them. There was an instance wherein he uttered a racist remark while talking to British student Simon Kerby during their trip to China.

“If you stay here much longer, you will go home with slitty eyes,” he said.
