Prince Philip’s fury over their family name was justified.

According to previous reports, the Duke of Edinburgh was furious when the government blocked him from using his family name to the royal house in 1952. However, his reaction was justified based on a historic precedent.

Hugo Vickers revealed in his 2017 book “The Crown: Truth and Fiction” that there was a historic precedent on his side why he reacted that way. Vickers pointed out that it was normal for a man who married a Queen Regent to give his family name.

“In this episode, Lord Mountbatten boasts, with some justification, that the House of Mountbatten now reigns in Britain,” Vickers said.

“Normally the male who marries a Queen Regnant gives his name to the new house. Hence, Queen Victoria was the last Queen of the House of Hanover, which became Saxe-Coburg when she married Prince Albert in 1840.”

According to Vickers, when Prince Ernst August of Hanover heard it, he did not like it. He informed Queen Mary, who called for Jock Colville, Winston Churchill’s private secretary. It was the Prime Minister who duly informed Queen Elizabeth II that the royal house must be called the House of Windsor. Prince Philip was livid after learning about it.

Prince Philip wrote a well-reasoned memorandum making his case. However, the government would not count the Mountbatten name being used.

In related news, Prince Philip was also furious when Prince Charles made a confession about his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. In an interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, the heir apparent said that he tried to be faithful to Princess Diana until things between them became irretrievably broken down.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were not happy after learning what their eldest son did. In fact, many considered it the “worst mistake” of his life.

“Many regarded as the worst mistake of his life. At the time many people thought it might cost him the throne,” Penny Junor wrote.

The Queen and the duke blamed Prince Charles for his divorce from Princess Diana. According to Robert Lacey, they were aware that the Prince of Wales was already committed to Camilla before he tied the knot with Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom.
