Prince William Accused Of ‘Doing Nothing’ Despite Role As Future Heir
It appears that despite the fact that he is the future King of England, some have felt over the years that Prince William may not be working as hard as he should as a member of the royal family.
According to a 2009 documentary “The Problem Princes,” royal experts at the time believed the future heir wasn’t doing his fair share of royal events and engagements, and it led to questions about whether or not he would really be able to bring the monarchy into a modern world as time progressed.
“Prince William is the future of the royal family itself and of the whole concept of the monarchy and of the United Kingdom for the next 50 or more years,” Royal historian Andrew Roberts said at the time. “He has the good looks of his mother, he has in that tragic smile the hopes and fears of a nation. He personifies what royalty is all about.”
However, royal writer James Whitaker didn’t feel the same way, noting that the Duke of Cambridge doesn’t take on as many royal engagements as the rest of the family.
“William is doing almost nothing,” he said at the time.
At the time, Prince William’s royal duty diary on average only contained 14 royal engagements per year, of which at least five were football or rugby matches. Though he was 26 years old at the time investigated, by comparison, his father Prince Charles, completed 84 engagements at the same age, while also holding down a full-time job in the Royal Navy. His mother, Princess Diana, also did 200 engagements in one year when she was 26-years-old, and the Queen Mother, then 87, completed more than 100.
In his criticism, Whitaker went on the state that he felt William’s advanced position meant he should be taking on more roles.
“I’m sorry, but a second in line of succession to the throne, he really should be doing more,” he said. Ime
Since 2009 of course, Prince William has greatly increased the amount of work he does as a more full-time role. According to Express UK, his 2018 calendar saw him finish the year with 150 events within the UK, as well as 70 additional ones overseas.
However, other members of the family still completed more tasks, with Charles making 398 UK appearances and 109 overseas visits, Queen Elizabeth, who had 283 UK engagements, and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who completed 193 engagements in the UK and 50 overseas visits.
