He’s going to be the King of England one day in the future, but that doesn’t mean Prince William has wanted to be someone who receives special treatment because of his status.

In a resurfaced interview from when he was 18 and volunteering in Chile (via Express UK), the heir to the throne admitted that special treatment was not what interested him, and it made his experience in the foreign country more special since he was being treated like anyone else.

“I don’t like being treated any different at all. I don’t like special treatment,” he said at the time. “Which is why I think I get along with these guys so well as well.”

His thoughts were echoed during his time as a student at St. Andrew’s University, where he also wanted to make sure that he didn’t disrupt the experience for other students—or that they felt they needed to treat him differently from the way they would other students.

“It’s so good because everyone sees me round the whole time and it’s no big deal, which is what I really want it to be,” he said at the time. “The last thing I want to do is cause loads of hype or problems, I just want to go in and get my asparagus or whatever.”

Of course, despite the fact that he prefers to be treated like everyone else Prince William’s time as someone who got to live a little less under the radar eventually came to an end as he assumed more royal roles, alongside his wife and college sweetheart, Kate Middleton. Though the two are constantly in the limelight now, they still make sure to try and do what they can to let their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, live a normal life.

“William and Kate very much prioritize bringing up their children in as normal an environment as possible over anything else,” a source told US Weekly in September 2018. “They haven’t lost sight of that.”
